Product details

It has been a dream of The Wood Tamer to release an Australian Made Carving Axe for a long time. Once we had finalised our design, we searched long and hard and sampled with Axe makers until we found The Farmer's Forge. Mick's attention to detail is incredible. He was able to take our design concepts and tweaks and develop this beautiful model that we are proud to release to the world.

In our search, we had several items that were on our non-negotiable and wish list. scroll down the page to see what makes this carving axe so special.

Couldn’t ask for better

This December just gone the fat man in the red suit dropped off an 860 carving axe. Because I was recovering from surgery it was not until more than halfway through January before I could use the 860. Hence this late review.

This is a terrific tool. Well balanced and the weight, for me, is just right. If asked, I would find it impossible to recommend another carving axe. It is the bee’s knees. Australian made. What more could you ask for?

Cheers

Almost too good looking to want to use!

Ergonomically fits amazingly into your hand and powers through. Great weight as well.

Beautifully made axe! I’ve been using it for some months now and it’s really been a joy and honor to use it. The ergonomics are well thought out on both the handle and the axe head itself, lending to control in every variety of grip one uses while chopping blanks and even doing some detailed planing work to clean things up. The weight is distributed perfectly and this thing can really take off some meat when you get to swinging. It sharpens back to a razor edge very easily when it needs to be touched and haven't had any issues with edge damage.

Aside from the functionality, it is a beautiful piece of art and a joy to hold. When next to my friend’s Kalthoff, it just looks more refined, finished, and considered. Wood is beautiful, handle bevels are crisp.

What more can I say? Do I love it more than I love spoons? Maybe. Probably. It’s an axe ready for a lifetime of use! And I’ll be enjoying it every time I put it to work.

Carving Axe Hut

Used the Farmer's Forged 860 Craving axe over the weekend for the first time.
Shaping some infills on a hut rebuild in Kosciuszko national park after the fires.
Axe is great to use well weighted and held its edge perfectly.
