Product details

The blade of this hook knife is exactly the same as its shorter handled sibling.

I am not a blacksmith but I know what I like in a hook knife.  So with the skills and help of Strongway tools they have been able to bring to life my very own Wood Tamer Compound Hook Knife.  The compound radius is a lot more suitable than a lot of compound hooks out there and that is exactly what I wanted.  It makes this hook great for cooking spoons and eating spoons and because the tip comes back on itself it is also suitable for bowls and kuksas without worrying if it will score the bottom of your piece while carving the walls.  To be completely honest it excels even my wildest dreams in functionality.  Thank you Strongway!

This stunning hook knife has been made by from hard wearing 52100 steel and is polished to a mirror finish.  It has been hand forged with a hollow on the inside edge that makes for easy sharpening.

We have had heaps of interest in the Wood Tamer hook but some of you like a longer handle. So we have stuck with the same idea of the octagonal handle as I believe this is a perfect shape for easy grip and the facets are great for thumb and finger placement. We then stretched the handle out and moved the swell out to the end so it sits nicely between your pinky and heel of your hand.  This is finished off with a beautifully rounded butt which sits comfortably into the palm with no sharp edges to blister your hand if you are hollowing out a cup or bowl.

The handle is made from Blackwood not stained Ash as previously offered.

It comes razor sharp straight out of the quality leather sheath.

We recommend only sharpening hook knives on the inside edge as you have a flat registration point to work with.  The outside of the blade has a convex surface from the tip to heel as well as from the edge to the spine which means that there is a complexity to could lead to headaches if you get it wrong.

Regular stropping however on the inside edge using a dowel with stropping compound and a stropping paddle for the outside edge is a great way to maintain a keen edge for  longer before you will even need to think about resharpening your hook knives.
