We use this gouge in our carving classes. It is perfect for spoons and small bowls. Is comfortable to hold for small to large hands and holds its sharpness well. The Stryi gouges are easy to keep sharp with a strop. Great for beginners to experienced carvers.
I've carved an estimated 2000+ forms (spoons and cups/bowls) with one of these 8L/30 Stryi gouges and find it hard to fault. It comes sharp, is strait forward to strop (essential) and with practice, sharpen. Relatively inexpensive compared with more robust striking gouges, it's ideal for spoon carving...which is where it's been used extensively in my business.
Six stars out of five.
Got the 30mm and my first bent gouge. Wow this is great to use. Green poplar spoon bowl was a joy to carve. Several other Woodworkers in today's session gave it a try and all smiled at how nice it was to use.
Have really enjoyed styri gouges so far. Edge holds up well in a variety of different grain. Handle feels great and I was surprised with how fast everything got here! Cheers and thanks!
