The BGM-100 Mounting Set for Bench Grinder enables the utilization of Tormek's woodturning tool jigs on your bench grinder. This proves advantageous when needing to remove a large amount of steel from a new tool in order to achieve your desired shape. It is important to avoid overheating the steel, as this can result in loss of the tool's temper.
Why BGM-100 Bench Grinder Mounting Set?
- Reshape the tool profile quickly and easily on your bench grinder.
- Allows you to use the SVD-186 R Gouge Jig, SVS-50 Multi Jig, SVD-110 Tool Rest and TTS-100 Turning Tool Setter on your bench grinder.
- Keep the same jig setting when sharpening on your Tormek as when you shaped the tool on the bench grinder.
- Easy to use.
- Works with most standard bench grinders with the correct grinding wheel.
Take control of your profiles
The BGM-100 Bench Grinder Mounting Set enables precise and consistent sharpening by allowing you to use the SVD-186 R Gouge Jig, SVS-50 Multi Jig, SVD-110 Tool Rest, and TTS-100 Turning Tool Setter with your bench grinder. This makes it effortless to repeat your sharpening process accurately, time and time again, regardless of the type of sharpening machine you use.
The BGM-100 Bench Grinder Mounting Set is a useful tool for woodturners who are dedicated Tormek users and need to quickly reshape their woodturning tools. While the Tormek water-cooled sharpening system is superior for most sharpening tasks, a bench grinder can be used for faster rough shaping.
With or without a Tormek machine
With the BGM-100 Bench Grinder Mounting Set, you can utilize Tormek's accurate jigs throughout the grinding process. No longer will you have to rely on guesswork to achieve the perfect shape on your bench grinder. Thanks to the TTS-100 Turning Tool Setter, you can easily remove material on the bench grinder and seamlessly transition to your Tormek machine for the final sharpening and honing without having to adjust the jig settings.
Utilize Tormek's jig system on your bench grinder to achieve precise shaping and sharpening, regardless of which machine you use. This method remains consistent whether you have a Tormek machine or not. In the future, if you choose to add a Tormek to your workshop, the necessary jigs for your woodturning tools are already in your possession.
Which grinding disc for the bench grinder?
Precision grinding of edge tools on a bench grinder requires the right grinding disc. Unfortunately, standard mounted discs are often too hard and can quickly lose their sharpening ability, leading to overheating. To avoid this, the worn abrasive grains must be removed during grinding to activate new grains. Otherwise, the disc will clog and the grains will slip, causing excessive friction and heat generation.
Utilize an aluminum oxide wheel matched with appropriate bonding to avoid burning or creating grooves. Keep the wheel clean and fresh, and use a grinding disc dresser recommended by the machine manufacturer.
The effect of heat on HSS steel
When comparing HSS steel and carbon steel, it is worth noting that HSS steel can withstand significantly higher temperatures without compromising its hardness. However, it's important to be mindful of the potential for the outermost, thin apex of the edge to reach temperatures that can impact its hardness and durability. As such, when grinding the tip of the edge, it is critical to exercise caution and avoid allowing it to turn blue.
Excessive heat exposure can decrease HSS steel hardness by up to 4 HRC (Rockwell), leading to a significant decrease in edge retention. To prevent this, avoid rapidly cooling the tool from high temperatures, as it can cause microscopic cracks in the edge that may not be visible to the naked eye.
Dealing with grinding dust
Possible rewrite: "To ensure safety, it is important to use an extractor when working with the Bench grinder Mounting Set. This will prevent the potential hazards caused by fine dust and steel particles from the grinding disc and tool. Please note, a separate dust extractor should be used instead of the same system for wood dust generated by woodworking machines, as sparks can ignite the fine wood dust."
